Most moving stress comes from doing everything in the last week. Spread the work out and moving day becomes just one long day, not a crisis.

How far ahead should I start planning a move?
Eight weeks is comfortable for most households. If you're moving in summer or at the end of a month in Austin, book movers or a truck six to eight weeks out, because those dates fill first.
What should I do first?
Pick your moving date, then book the movers or truck. Everything else (packing, utilities, address changes) fits around that date.
How many boxes will I need?
A rough rule is 15 to 25 boxes per room, more for kitchens and books. Start packing what you use least, a few boxes a day.
